Graduate students in classSIT's Master of Arts in International Education program formally prepares more professionals in the field of international education than any other university in the world today and is the oldest program of its kind. Students come to develop expertise in areas that include advising, exchange management, nonformal and community education, volunteer program management, language teaching administration, and development education. Students choose from flexible program options to fit their needs.

Master of Arts in International Education, On Campus

Students spend nine month’s on SIT’s Vermont campus completing core and elective coursework and then complete a six-month practicum at a site of the student’s choosing. While on campus, students have valuable access to SIT Study Abroad and The Experiment in International Living, administered from the SIT campus.

Master of Arts in International Education, Online with Short Residencies in Vermont

This program is designed for professionals already working in the field of international education who want to advance their career with an MA. Students complete the program without having to leave their jobs or home communities. The program comprises primarily online coursework; students come to SIT’s campus in Vermont for two short residencies held during the summer.

  • Duration: Two years
  • Format: Online with three 1- to 2-week residencies on SIT’s Vermont campus
  • Field courses in the US and abroad (optional): Students can study abroad as part of their MA program through an intensive field course

Graduate Certificate in International Education, Online with a Short Residency

The graduate certificate program is popular with international education professionals who have a master’s degree in another field and are looking to increase their understanding of international education. Students who complete the certificate program can easily continue with SIT’s online MA program in international education, if they so choose.

  • Duration: One year
  • Format: Online with a 2-week residency on SIT’s Vermont campus
  • Field courses in the US and abroad (optional): Students can study abroad as part of their MA program through an intensive field course

In all programs, students acquire a comprehensive education in the historical, theoretical, and social foundations of international education programs. Students examine the effects of globalization, internationalization efforts, changing technology, and education policy on international programs. Learning derives from faculty instruction, personal practice, analysis, and direct experience. Current experience in the field of international education is expected for the online program options but previous or anticipated experience may be considered. The online programs are often a good fit for working professionals who do not wish to leave their current jobs and communities.
