About SIT

commencementSince 1964, SIT Graduate Institute has been preparing professionals to be successful in intercultural and international environments.

Master's Degree and Certificate Programs in a Variety of Content Areas and Formats

SIT Graduate Institute prepares students from across the globe to be effective leaders, professionals, and citizens. SIT’s graduate and professional development programs are rooted in the experiential education model, where learning occurs at the nexus of theory and practice. Students are trained to become highly skilled practitioners who have a commanding knowledge of the theoretical basis of their profession; experience in the field; and an awareness of their own capabilities, values, and ethics.

Students can choose from various MA, certificate, and professional development programs in fields ranging from international education to sustainable development to conflict transformation to language teaching. In order to accommodate diverse professional and personal objectives, programs of varying duration and format are offered on SIT’s historic 200-acre campus in Vermont; at the SIT Graduate Institute Washington, DC Center; online; and at overseas field sites. In each program area, students examine contemporary social, economic, and political issues, with particular attention to the human and ethical dimensions of these issues.

An Alumni Network with Global Reach

SIT graduates go on to start nonprofit organizations, work in the field of international education, teach English as a second language, become government and civic leaders, and achieve success in the private sector in diverse entities across the globe. Students gain the leadership capabilities and cross-cultural competencies needed to advance international understanding, work effectively in multicultural environments, and foster a more socially just and economically sustainable world.

SIT’s family of alumni includes US diplomats, international education directors, English and ESL professors, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, development specialists, grassroots organizers, and other professionals working in myriad capacities across the globe.

As the higher education institute of World Learning — a leading international development organization with a commitment to social justice — SIT is uniquely qualified to prepare its graduates to work with communities around the world in meeting their development needs. The World Learning/SIT global network of professional and academic contacts and the institution’s ongoing development projects help students advance their careers by building connections worldwide.
