Admissions Criteria

Students must have a high school degree and show a capacity for college-level education including a good understanding of the English language and solid writing skills.

All applicants must submit an application along with a one-page essay. Non-native speakers must have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 on the written test or 250 on the computerized version, an IELTS Band 7.0 or higher, or a CEF C1. Non-native speakers must also have a second interview to ensure their listening/speaking skills are adequate to take the course and to teach English. All participants must show a willingness to plan and teach in groups and to work reflectively.

Earning Graduate-Level Credit

Earn your SIT TESOL Certificate plus five graduate credits!

SIT Graduate Institute offers a $2,000 tuition discount for students who pursue an MA in TESOL at SIT after completing the certificate program.
Are you considering pursuing graduate studies in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a related field after earning your certificate? Participants who successfully complete the SIT TESOL certificate course can earn five graduate credits* awarded by SIT Graduate Institute.

If you are interested in pursuing the option for graduate credit, check with the Registrar’s Office at the college or university you are currently attending or plan to attend. Credits earned from SIT are transferable only at the discretion of the receiving school. If you decide to opt-in for credit, you must also register this option with SIT’s Registrar’s Office; follow the guidelines in the drop-down below.

The SIT TESOL certificate is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.

How to Opt-in for Graduate-Level Credit with SIT

You must decide to opt in or out of receiving graduate-level credit before your course begins. Once the course has begun, the SIT Registrar’s Office will not reconsider the graduate credit option. 
 
If you wish to pursue graduate credit, you may register online. Choosing the credit option means you will pay an additional $500 fee for credit directly to SIT, and upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded five graduate credits. You may pay by check or online with MasterCard, Visa, or Discover, including a flat convenience fee of $50 per transaction for payment of the registration fee. 

In submitting the graduate credit application, you indicate that you have chosen to take the course for graduate-level credit and that you understand that if you change your mind or fail to complete the course credit requirements, the cost of credit will not be refunded.

The first step to become a Training Center is to complete an application, and demonstrate willingness and capacity to run a successful course. After two successful courses, a center is then invited to be certified.
