Michael P. Smallis

Michael Smallis has been SIT’s dean of students since summer 2008. Michael has over twenty-five years of experience in student affairs and is particularly skilled in the areas of student development and leadership, conflict resolution, parent relations, risk mitigation, and crisis management. At SIT, he serves as the chief student affairs officer for SIT Study Abroad and SIT Graduate Institute and has oversight for the various units within the division of student affairs, including residence life, risk management, campus life, counseling, disability services, student activities, international students, student conduct, and health and wellness management.
Prior to joining SIT, Michael served as the deputy to the vice president of Student Affairs at City College of New York. He was instrumental in creating the first residential life program for the campus along with retooling the student life and orientation programs. During his long tenure at Fairleigh Dickinson University, he served in almost every student affairs position and completed his career there in the role of associate dean of students. Michael holds a BA in journalism and an MS in education from Duquesne University.
