Joseph Lanning, Program Chair

Dr. Joseph Lanning is an economic and agricultural anthropologist whose research focuses on agricultural decision-making and food insecurity, including the agricultural livelihoods of rural Malawians. He holds a PhD in anthropology from the University of Georgia. Formerly, he was a US Peace Corps volunteer who worked in the areas of public health, irrigation, and agroecology. He is also an alumnus of SIT Study Abroad in Kenya. Joe has nearly two decades of experience teaching and managing undergraduate and graduate-level anthropology research methods field schools in Malawi and Samoa. He is a managing partner for a small-scale agroecological demonstration farm in Malawi and directs the SIT Study Abroad comparative International Honors Program Food Systems: Agriculture, Sustainability, and Justice.
