All Applicants:

  • A completed online application form.
  • A $50 (US) application fee or applicable waiver
    • Alumni of SIT: request a code from admissions counselor prior to submission
    • Attendance at a program webinar: request a code from admissions counselor prior to submission
  • A professional résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) detailing: 
    • Comprehensive professional experiences 
    • Volunteer work 
    • Community engagement 
    • International or intercultural experiences 
    • Affiliation with SIT Partner(s)
  • Names and contact information for professional and/or academic references (no personal references) 
    • Electronic forms will be sent to recommenders to fill out on applicant’s behalf 
      • Doctoral degrees: 2 academic, 1 professional preferred
      • Global masters: 1 professional (from a current or former supervisor preferred), 1 academic preferred
  • Official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities 
    • Submission options:

Global Master’s Applicants

Two essays, typed in English, answering all questions. 

  • Identify a social issue that presents a significant challenge in a context that you have experienced or witnessed. The issue may concern education, development, conflict, and/or any other subject that interests you and is relevant to your degree at SIT. The context of your inquiry may be interpersonal, communal, national, and/or international in scope. Analyze the primary sources and effects of the social issue as deeply and systematically as you can. Then draw implications from your analysis for what practical action can and should be take to address the issue constructively. (750–1000 words)
  • Articulate your vision of professional development with an eye toward what you would like to do in 5–10 years after the successful completion of your graduate studies at SIT. Then describe what concrete skills and capacities you will need to acquire at SIT, and how your educational, vocational, and personal experience prior to SIT will enable you to prepare for realizing your vision of graduate studies and professional development. Be sure to include thoughtful self-reflections on less developed areas of your inquiry and skill-building that will need to be developed in the course of your graduate studies at SIT. (500–750 words)

PhD Applicants

Note: SIT prefers a graduate master’s program GPA of 3.5

  • Statement of Purpose (2-3 pages double spaced) essay
    • Demonstrate your interest in the PhD at SIT
    • Address how your experience will contribute to success in the program
    • Describe how completion of the degree will support long-term professional goals
    • Propose your research topic and guiding question(s) and their significance to the field
EdD Applicants

Note: SIT prefers a graduate master’s program GPA of 3.5

  • Statement of Purpose (3-5 pages double spaced) essay:
    • Demonstrate your interest in the EdD at SIT
    • Address how your prior academic and professional experiences have prepared you to undertake doctoral studies
    • Describe how completion of the degree will support long-term professional goals
    • Propose your research topic, explain its importance (your why), and its significance to the field
  • Writing Sample: 20 to 30-page excerpt from a master’s thesis, term paper, literature review, publications or similar quality work
    • Submission(s) must be individual, not group work
International Applicants

In some countries, the term “transcript” may not be a familiar term. To be official, a transcript must include the following:

  • Your name
  • The institution’s name
  • Student identification number
  • Date of birth
  • Dates you attended the institution
  • Titles of the specific courses or subjects in which you were enrolled
  • Number of hours of instruction or other learning involved in each course or subject
  • Grade, mark, or other evaluation you received for each course or subject
  • Degree, diploma, certificate, or other qualifications awarded for completion of studies

To be official, the document(s) must contain the institution’s stamp or other certification that clearly indicates authenticity. In cases where the above requested information is not available, an applicant should contact the SIT admissions office for advice on the best way to proceed. In cases where the transcript is not in English, an original certified translation must accompany by the official document.
