PhD Programs

PhD students have the option to request the transfer of up to 15 credits of relevant previous graduate coursework.  Of these, a minimum of three transfer credits must demonstrate the student’s familiarity with academic research methods and ethics and their capacity to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

To apply transfer credit(s) to their SIT degree program, students must receive approval from the chair of their degree program and the registrar.  The evaluation occurs when a complete application is reviewed for admission. Upon acceptance, students will receive notification of the number of approved transfer credits.  A preliminary assessment based on unofficial transcripts may be conducted during the application phase.

The following criteria are used to consider whether graduate coursework completed at another institution may be approved:

  • Graduate course work must have been completed at a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or at an institution in a foreign country that is recognized by the Ministry of Education of the country issuing the document.
  • The official evaluation of transfer credits must be done from an official transcript, sent directly to SIT. International documents must be accompanied by certified English translations. If a translation is not available, the student must use an international credential evaluation service to provide the transcript evaluation.
  • Courses requested for transfer credit must be listed on the official transcript as being at the graduate level and related to the student’s SIT degree program.
  • Graduate work must have been completed with a minimum grade of B (3.00) on a 4.0 grading scale, or the equivalent for international documents.
  • Students wishing to apply transfer credit earned after their matriculation to SIT must receive written permission from the degree chair and the registrar prior to enrolling in the course at the other institution.
  • Coursework taken at SIT should not duplicate coursework accepted as transfer credit. If coursework is repeated, transfer credit is removed.
